Bird Description:Pavo muticus muticus, or Java Green Peacock is the largest member of the peafowl family. An impressive bird with a stately crest and iridescent green feathers, he is a beautiful sight. Even though the green peafowl have a wide natural distribution range in the wild, from northern Myanmar and southern China to Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Peninsular Malaysia and the islands of Java, his numbers have been reduced due to hunting and habitat destruction. Careful captive breeding is necessary to ensure the survival of this beautiful bird. Male and female Java green are rather similar, unless the male is sporting his rather impressive tail during breeding season. Males grow up to 10 feet long, including their train, whereas females get to be about 3 to 3 1/2 feet. In American aviculture the pure Java Green "Pavo muticus muticus" has become difficult to find due to hybridization with the India blue peacock (creating the Spaulding peacock) and the other green peafowl subspecies. At Averill Farms we have tried very hard to keep our bloodlines pure and we only work with the most reputable peafowl breeders in the country to keep the genetic diversity as large as possible. Therefore we have some of the best bloodline in the country and are able to sell unrelated pairs.
